The site is live, now what? 5 essentials of ongoing technical support

Many companies only look at their website after launch when something goes wrong. Yet most of those problems would never happen with regular maintenance. These are the main jobs technical support should cover.

1. Updates. Server software, PHP or Node.js, the CMS and its plugins need to be updated on time. Most attacks go through flaws that have long been known but were never patched on that server.

2. Backups. Automatic backups should be in place, copies kept in a separate location and restores tested regularly. We covered this in detail in our post on the 3-2-1 rule.

3. Monitoring. Uptime, server resources and SSL certificate expiry should be watched so problems show up before customers notice them.

4. Security checks. Logs should be reviewed regularly for suspicious activity, unknown files on the server and login attempts on admin accounts.

5. Small changes and improvements. There is always a need for a new page, form or feature. Having it done by a team that knows the site is both faster and safer.
