Many companies only realise how important backups are when data is lost. A server disk can fail, a site can be attacked, an employee can delete an important folder by mistake. In those cases getting back to work within hours is only possible with a properly set up backup.
The 3-2-1 rule
Keep at least 3 copies of your data: the original and two backups. Store them on 2 different types of storage, for example the server's own disk and a separate storage service. And keep 1 copy somewhere else entirely: in another data centre or in cloud storage. That way a single incident can't destroy every copy at once.
Common mistakes
The problem we see most often is keeping the backup on the same server: when the server fails, the backup goes with it. The second mistake is never testing the backup. Restores should be tried regularly, otherwise you may find out on the day you need it that the files are damaged. The third is forgetting the database: you need to back up the database, not just the files.
Against ransomware, keep at least one copy somewhere the server itself cannot change.
