What is a penetration test and when does your company need one

A penetration test (pentest) is a controlled attack carried out with permission. Specialists test your website, application or network using the methods a real attacker would use and report the weaknesses they find. The goal is to find problems before attackers do.

How it differs from an automated scanner

Automated scanners find known vulnerabilities quickly, but they miss logic errors: for example, one user being able to see another user's order, or skipping the payment step. Problems like these are only found by a specialist who understands how the system works.

When you need one

  • Before a new system or application goes live.
  • After a major update or a new module.
  • When personal, payment or financial data is processed.
  • When a partner, client or regulator requires it.
  • At least once a year as a regular check.

How a test works

First, the scope and rules of the test are agreed in writing. Then the test is carried out, the weaknesses found are grouped by severity and written up in a report with recommendations for fixing them. After the fixes, the test is repeated.
