Why your website is slow and how to fix it

Visitors don't wait long for a website to open. If a page doesn't appear within a few seconds, people go back and click on a competitor. Google also takes speed into account and measures it with Core Web Vitals: how quickly the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page responds to clicks (INP) and whether elements jump around while it loads (CLS).

The causes we see most often

  • Unoptimised images: a photo of several megabytes taken on a phone is uploaded as it is.
  • Unnecessary scripts: unused plugins, several analytics tags and chat widgets.
  • No caching: the page is built from scratch on every request.
  • Weak or overloaded hosting, an old PHP version.

What you can do

Convert images to WebP or AVIF and size them for the screen. Use lazy loading for images further down the page. Remove plugins and scripts you don't use. Add caching at page and database level and serve static files through a CDN. Check that the server runs a supported PHP version and has enough resources.

To get started, test your site in Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. The report shows exactly where the problem is.
